CROSS-LANGUAGE TRANSFER of PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS in MANDARIN CHINESE-SPEAKING CHILDREN in TAIWAN
Wu Yu-wen. - 2010
; This study aims to explore cross-language transfer of phonological awareness in elementary school children in Taiwan A total of 147 third graders participated in the present study They were administered to the phonological awareness measures and the language proficiency measures both in Mandarin Chinese and English The results first of all showed that Mandarin Chinese phonological awareness was significantly correlated not only with Mandarin Chinese proficiency but also with English proficiency In addition the results revealed that Mandarin Chinese phonological awareness was also strongly correlated with English phonological awareness Second the results of two-way ANOVA showed that children’s native language proficiency (i e Mandarin Chinese proficiency) had a strong effect on English phonological awareness but gender difference was not an important factor to affect children’s performance on English phonological awareness Third the results of hierarchical regression analysis showed that cross-language transfer of phonological awareness from Mandarin Chinese to English was evident in Mandarin Chinese-speaking children learning English as a foreign language (EFL) More important the results of the present study provide evidence that development of English phonological awareness on the part of Mandarin Chinese-speaking children was notably benefited from their development of Mandarin Chinese phonological awareness
